School Site Council & English Learner Advisory Committee Orientation

In this meeting, we will go over the purposes and functions of two important school community governing bodies: School Site Council (SSC) and the English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC).

These groups are required by the California Education Code and directed by LAUSD policy. The SSC is mandated under California Education Code 65000 and makes decisions regarding the School Plan for Student Achievement, the Comprehensive School Safety Plan, categorical funding, parent engagement, and other related matters. The SSC represents all our stakeholders and is comprised of teachers, parents/community, other school staff, principal or designee, and students in secondary schools only.

The ELAC is mandated under California Education Code 52176(b). All schools with twenty-one (21) or more English learner (EL) students are required to establish an ELAC. The ELAC advises on programs and services for EL students and on strategies to engage parents in support of their child’s education. The ELAC consists of parents or legal guardians, not employed by LAUSD, of EL students or Reclassified Fluent English Proficient (RFEP) students who have reclassified within the last two years and other interested stakeholders.

All are welcome to attend and all are welcome to run for council and committee openings. Elections will be held on September 18, 2020.
